It is really good to have this recording. Though Kachaturian doesn't quite make the virtuosic demands of Maxwell Davis's 'Door of the sun' it is far from easy. But it is also enjoyable to play. One rarely gets the opportunity to listen to it. Very welcome and a good clear performance.

Best A pitch ever

The name of the conductor should have been given as well as the fact that this is the completion by Tibor Serly although she and the conductor make some corrections and alterations based on recent research.

Before I stopped playing Viola, this was the piece I was preparing. After years of covert depression, mastering with the brooding within, and becoming a man, I feel if I picked up the viola today, I’d have more to bring to the table then when I was in practice.

Great lively performance! pressed in 1979 by Odyssey but recording must be originally done in 1953 and issued from Columbia in 1954. He had listening problem in his old age and was not fit for performance like this in 1979(3years before his death), though his hands were still very agile...what a pity....

Almost 20 years later and still amazed. One of the best if not the Best Classical Viola Player Alive. The Concertgebouw Orchestra was spectacular as well.

Malipiero conceived solo concertos as "orations: a voice gets up and the orchestra follows it as a listening crowd". Giacomo Manzoni (How to listen to Symphonic music) describes this piece as one of M's most impressive pieces for solo and orchestra. The viola part sounds like the voice of a medieval minstrel talking once with some instruments once with the full orchestra. The movements are "non mosso, ritenuto", "lento", "allegro".

I like the viola and orchestra combination. A very nice piece!
